๐ช๐ผ Hard work always pays off
Unfortunately, we came 11th in the Hormozis competition. The top 10 finishers will receive a prize, which is a joint Podcast with Alex. When I found out that we were only 4 email addresses down, I was a little sad.
But I wrote back in my email that I was sorry about that, but thank you for the opportunity. It has taught me a lot that I need to work even harder for what I want to achieve. ๐๐ป
3 days passed and I received a new email saying:
Because we were so close, we were selected! So, we also get the opportunity to do a Podcast together! ๐คฉ
I cannot describe how happy and grateful I am at the same time! This definitely couldn't have been done without you guys, so I have the big task ahead of me to put together an unforgettable broadcast for you!
๐ The Help Center is ready
Kokesz has already done the design and coded it, from now on it's just me and Dani's turn to fill it with articles. The purpose of this would be that if you have any problem in the App, you could even solve it yourself.
Okay, now we can start!
๐ญ Why is it important to talk about this?
In today's hustle culture, it's becoming normal to work 80 hours a week and never leave your computer screen. Not only is this not normal, it's insanely harmful.
I'll show you what happens to your body. ๐
Imagine your body and mind like the engine in a car. ๐
If you're pushing it at 1,000 rpm and not stopping, it's like revving the engine at 6,000 rpm in gear 1.
I don't know that much about cars, but even I know that's not good for it.
Just as it's not good for the engine, it's not good for your body. Because it can't rest and recharge sufficiently, you will gradually lose quality of work, make worse decisions and have no creative ideas. โ
It's a bit like being burnt out.
And why is this becoming the norm in our society?
Because we see it on Instagram non-stop. The algorithm will quickly figure us out and will only throw in "ultra-successful" young people who are already - and here comes the key phrase - "where we NEED to be". ๐คจ
We work so hard because we feel "left behind".
After all, you like to compare yourself to others and if you spend most of your day seeing young people who are so successful, you subconsciously start to measure yourself against them. Which is a completely wrong perception. I'll explain why in a moment.
๐ก Side note: When I was younger, I was quite jealous of others who were more "successful" than me. Until I read a very good thought about it. You don't know what the other person's whole life is like, you're only jealous of part of their life. And it's not entirely life-like, think of it as you could have that part of his life, but only if you had to trade your whole life. Would you trade it with him like that? And in most cases the answer is NO, at least not for me.
But nothing proves the negative effects of social media more than a US study where 18-year-olds were asked where they thought they would be when they were 25. 54% of them said they'd be dollar millionaires by then. So more than half of the students. By comparison, the number of 25-year-old dollar millionaires in America is just 0.1%.๐คฏ
Because they only follow people like this on social media, they think this is the norm and that everyone will be a millionaire by age 25. But this is not true!
Because they compare themselves to such people, no matter how much they work, they are unlikely to make it. So, they will constantly have the feeling of "I need to work more" and "I'm still behind".
A vicious circle that is very difficult to get out of! ๐
It's when you work more and more and face more and more obstacles. It's like everything is against you. Then you have those setbacks. That you just don't understand why they happen.
Here are a few examples:
We've worked hard on BookBase - but there are fewer subscribers
I paid a lot of attention to my diet and exercise - but I still got sick
These are mentally taxing, because you feel helpless. Suddenly, you don't know what the right solution is, or if there is any way out. ๐ค
But what can you do when you're in a rut?
But first...
A small request: if you've enjoyed today's article so far and learned something new from it, I'd be very grateful if you could send it to a friend or simply share it on social media. It would help a lot in getting more people to read my thoughts. Not to mention, you can even get a gift for it!
Thank you! ๐งก
๐ฃ 7 steps to overcome your obstacles
1.ย ย ย ย First and hardest, admit to yourself that you are in a pit right now. This takes no small amount of self-awareness and frankly, it feels pretty sh*tty. Think about it, you've done a lot of work and you haven't got the results, at least not the results you imagined.
๐จ๐ฝ My own example: on the Roadtrip we made a lot of improvements on BookBase, yet the subscription numbers didn't change. It was hard to admit, but we had to realize that we were in a hole.
2.ย ย ย ย To see what got you into it? If you're already in it, at least learn from it. You might as well write it down in a diary, that's what I did.
๐จ๐ฝ My example: the problem was that users only used the app for a few days. The habit could not develop. So, they either cancelled at the end of the trial period or at the end of the first month. So, we couldn't grow because just as many new people came in, just as many left.
๐ Book recommendation: The Art of Thinking Clearly, is perfect to help you with this task. It is also in English on the BookBase, only the title is in English.
3.ย ย ย ย Now that we can see the Why. Now it's time to focus on the solution. Ask yourself the question: How can I get out of this as soon as possible? Put another way, what would it take for ME to get out of this pit?
Then the answers will be very clear. Your brain already knows the solution, you just haven't got it to think about it yet.
๐ก Side note: You can do this as if you were on a coaching call. It helps you to see your own obstacles from an outside perspective. As silly as it sounds, I frankly went on a Zoom call - alone - where I talked to myself. No, I'm not crazy, I just needed that outside perspective. And I have to say, it has helped a LOT! Extra tip if you're taking notes somewhere along the way.
๐จ๐ฝ My example: we needed something to motivate users to improve and use the App more. It could be fixing bugs, making the App load faster or even the Streak System.
4.ย ย ย ย After that we will have plenty of answers. And not bad answers either. After all, who better to give you personalized advice than you yourself.
But you may already have the end goal in mind, but not the exact plan. That's when people panic and say it doesn't make sense. It can be scary to start on your journey like that, but believe me, a lot of people do. It's enough to see your next step and then, when you're there, you'll see the one after that.
๐จ๐ฝ My example: All of the above are good, but would take a lot of time, so we tried to focus on 1 thing, and that was the Streak system.
๐ Book recommendations: The Decision Book, to help you determine your first move. Yes, it's also up in English on BookBase!
๐ Book recommendations: The Great Mental Models, my favorite book on this subject. Because it not only focuses on logic, but also tries to take emotions completely out of the decision-making process. You can also find this in BookBase.
5.ย ย ย ย If you know your next step, then break it down into smaller parts. Right down to the point where you can say, "I'm going to do that!".
If you have that, you are well on your way to knowing why you got into it, you know what you need to do and you have made your next step so simple that you can do it "smoothly".
๐จ๐ฝ My example: Integrating Streak is an insanely big task, so we broke it down into smaller steps: Streak Design, Streak Emails, Streak Notifications, Streak Gifts. That way they didn't seem so daunting.
But without the next step, it's not worth it!
6.ย ย ย ย Take the first step!
You can think for hours, you can hold hundreds of calls, but until you get yourself to actually get out of this pit, nothing will happen. You'll be stuck in that same deep hole and you'll be just as clueless as you were at the beginning.
๐ญ Remember that:
"You don't need motivation to take action. You need action and NOW THAT is what motivates you."
This is called the myth of motivation.
๐จ๐ฝ My own example: as soon as I had this, Kokesz immediately started Streak Design, Edu coded the logic behind it and I wrote the emails and notifications. Neither of us were interrupted in the task. We were still making progress!
7.ย ย ย ย Wait 7 days and check your current status now. Review if what you planned to do was successful, if so, have you made progress towards your goal.
If not, no problem, everyone has made bad decisions. Here's your chance to forge a new plan with your new experience.
If the answer is yes, great! You're on the right track to getting closer to your goal!
๐จ๐ฝ My example: True for us it took a bit longer than 7 days, but after we threw out the new update, we waited a week and analyzed the numbers. I have to say our assumption was right, young people did use the App more because of the Streak system. So, the number of users started to increase! In short, this is our story of overcoming the obstacles.
๐ก Side note: Slightly off topic, but I think it's important to mention that your Happiness, should never depend on your goals. Don't tell yourself that I will be Happy when I achieve this and that. Because that would mean that you are not giving yourself permission to be Happy until you reach that particular goal.
๐
๐ฝโโ๏ธ 5 ways to prevent these "setbacks"
1.ย ย ย ย Look at the activities that recharge you and do more of them. It's best to tie them to something. For example, if I can do this activity, I can go out with the boys in the evening. ๐ฑ
2.ย ย ย ย Take regular time for mental recharging: meditation, time in nature, reading, etc.๐
3.ย ย ย ย Write a diary! For me, by far, this has helped the most. Since writing a journal, I have gotten into significantly fewer potholes and they have been much smaller. It gives me a place to write out my thoughts and examine them. ๐
4.ย ย ย ย Ask your friends for feedback. When I was 23, there was a period when I was really high. That's when OM really took off and the money took me. It was then that my friends started telling me that what I was doing sucked and it was time to get back to my old self. It really hurt me right there and then, but I am so grateful to them for pulling me back to reality.
๐ก Side note: It's important to get feedback from people who understand the subject. For example, don't ask your high school friend how you could scale your company to 1 billion if he just doesn't have a 1-billion-dollar company. Just like you don't ask a billionaire businessman how to change your personality, because he doesn't know you. Pay close attention to that!
5.ย ย ย ย Finally, my favorite is "The obstacle is the way" mentality.
Ryan Holiday's book serves as a Bible for those who face such obstacles. Not coincidentally, it is one of my favorite books. The whole point is, we need to look at obstacles in a different way. Instead of fearing them and trying to avoid them. Let's look at them as an opportunity for progress. Because if you overcome an obstacle, you become more! So, with each obstacle you can become stronger and stronger! ๐ช๐ผ
+1 Bonus Don't compare yourself to others, because you don't know what their life is like. You only see a small part of their lives and on social media, everyone is putting their best face forward anyway. Always try to surpass yesterdays you. Remember, according to the principle of "compound interest", if you were 1% better person every day, you would be 37x better person by the end of the year, which is pretty rough! ๐
The principle of compound interest: The easiest way to illustrate is with an example. If you are 1% better off on the first day, that's 100 x 1.01 = 101. On the second day, it's 101 x 1.01 = 102.01. On the 30th day, it's 134.78. The point is that not only does your principal earn interest, but your interest earns interest.
๐ฅ Challenge
Fewer people are opening emails, we're down from 38% to 36%, which is still not bad, but significantly less. I've thought a lot about why that might be, but I haven't come up with anything yet.
I don't know if the content of the letters has got worse or if I just can't really hit the addresses. But it's time to experiment with some other structure.
๐ What have I just read?
I started working on Hormozi's new book, $100 Million Leads.
He writes about how you can get yourself new leads for your product or service. I can honestly say that I have never seen a book that explains such a complex subject in such a simple way.
It really is written in a way that a 5th grade student could understand. That's how you know that someone understands the subject he's talking about, that he can explain it simply. Well, Alex is a prime example of that! ๐ง
๐ง What have I just listened to?
Since I've been on forced rest for the last couple of days, my brain hasn't been able to take in too many new things. So, I tried to cheer myself up with music, which I did. I have quite an interesting style of music, which is different from today's pop culture.
But if you're interested, here's my Spotify playlist:
